The report from Interbrand found that Google’s brand value had risen 44% in the past 12 months to $17.8bn (£8.8bn), which put it in 20th place.

Coca-Cola came top of the league for the seventh year running, despite its value falling 3%.

Nokia is the highest-ranking brand from outside the US, while American brands made up more than half of the top 100.

The brands are valued using sales and a consideration of how important the brand is in the sector.

In soft drinks, for example, branding is considered very important, while it is much less important to people buying garden tools.

The biggest faller was Ford, whose brand value fell 19%, putting it at number 41 in the league.

The report says that Ford’s long-term decline demonstrates how an iconic brand can lose its way.

It highlights the carmaker’s permanent discount policy in the US as a factor that has eroded the value of its brand.

A global study by analysts comScore revealed that more than 61 billion searches were performed by more than 750 million users in the month.

Users performed more than 37 billion searches via Google, more than all the other major search engines combined.

Yahoo was the second most used engine, followed by Baidu, the Chinese language search engine, the report said.

“Seeing Asian search engines like China’s Baidu.com and Korea’s NHN ranked alongside Google and Yahoo underscores the fact that search has become a truly global phenomenon,” said Bob Ivins, executive vice president of international markets at comScore, in a statement.

NHN was the fifth most used search engine, according to the story, just behind Microsoft.

The study revealed that most search activity happens in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes countries such as China, Japan and India.

More than 258 million unique users in the region carried out 20.3 billion searches in August, said comScore.

Europe had the second largest total of searchers (210 million), followed by North America (206 million).

“The search market in the Middle East-Africa region is the most underdeveloped thus far, with the fewest searchers (30 million),” said the report.

Cambodia has invited international law enforcement agencies to help protect the country’s ancient temples.

US homeland security and FBI agents are among those who may be advising the new national heritage police force.

Looting is evident even at protected Angkor Wat

They are hoping to put an end to the rampant looting that has seen many monuments stripped of their statues.

Peace has not been kind to many of Cambodia’s ancient monuments. As decades of conflict ended in the 1990s, looting accelerated dramatically.

The local authorities and the United Nations’ cultural organisation, Unesco, moved quickly to protect the world-famous Angkor Wat and its surrounding temples.

But more remote sites were left to their fate.

Stolen-to-order

US agents and local officers have been meeting in Siem Reap to discuss ways of protecting what is left.

US special agent Ann Hurst said their experience of dealing with stolen artefacts from Iraq will be crucial.

“We can provide training in how to prevent these types of violations. There were stolen paintings and stolen coins being taken out of Iraq and smuggled in to the US,” she said.

“What we did in those cases was prosecute the people who smuggled the goods in – and the people who accepted the goods in the US.”

Many Cambodian items have been stolen to order for private collectors.

Others have turned up at international auction houses, so expertise in intercepting illicit shipments is badly needed.

Technical assistance in detection and policing will also bolster the thinly-stretched and poorly-funded local forces.

For Cambodia, stopping the looting is partly a matter of pride – the towers of Angkor adorn the national flag – but as tourism grows, so does the economic importance of preserving ancient treasures.
